About

As We Speak tells the story of ten young artists and community organisers from across the Commonwealth.

It is a worldwide funding and storytelling scheme based on the simple premise that people who have built their lives around creativity and community already know best what they need.

Unlike traditional commissions and funding streams, we have decided to support artists’ existing practice, and give them a platform to show it to the rest of the world.

Each contributing creative is offered a no-strings-attached grant to simply continue and deepen their existing work, and we showcase their process to the wider public, eventually bringing the threads together in one inspiring story.

Call it trust-based support; call it a documentary; call it a global experiment in shared experience and purpose.

Whatever you call it, it’s happening as we speak.

Birmingham 2022 Festival presents As We Speak. Produced by Beatfreeks. Generously supported by Arts Council England, British Council and National Lottery Heritage Fund
